Two young women, Angela and Erin, who have long been best friends in the preexistence, are finally parted when Angela is sent to earth in the mid-1800’s. She is very concerned about going to earth when the church is so new and wonders if she’ll get a chance to hear the gospel during her earth life. Erin wishes she was going with Angela but she’s been told that she is being held in reserve until the end is near. To calm her friend’s fears, Erin makes a solemn promise to Angela. If she is not able to hear the gospel in her lifetime, Erin will make sure that her temple ordinances are completed when it’s her turn on earth.
Despite her fears, Angela and her family meet a pair of LDS missionaries in the marketplace and she receives a copy of the Book of Mormon. Angela reads the book the missionaries gave her and knows in her heart that the book is true. But Angela is ill with consumption and passes away before she can convince her family to find the missionaries so they can be baptized into the church.
The musical continues with Erin on earth in the present day. She is not a member of the church but is a bright, thoughtful young woman from a good family. Unfortunately the young man she is dating is deceitful and self-absorbed but also charming and good-looking. Erin knows he isn’t a perfect guy but doesn’t realize just how imperfect he is.
While she is dealing with peer pressure from her boyfriend and others at school, she finds an old diary and Book of Mormon in a dilapidated trunk from her Grandmother’s attic. The diary belonged to her great, great grandmother, Samantha, who is also Angela’s younger sister. The old copy of the Book of Mormon is none other than the one Angela received from the missionaries in England so many years ago. Erin resonates with the old book from the moment she begins to read.
With Angela providing encouragement from the spirit world, Erin must decide between her boyfriend and the life she’s always known or the familiar feelings that stir within her when she reads the old copy of the Book of Mormon. Her decision, like so many of us, will affect more lives in eternity than she could possibly know.
